Based on our discussion, I was expecting your second post to be a continuation of your first one—an adequate reportage on our class’ field trip to Farouk’s opening at the MAK Center. What you posted here seems like a summary of the biographies of Farouk and Bilal. While informative, it does not fit into the commentary/analysis that our class assignments require. I think you needed to do more here to integrate the information from your research into your thoughts and reactions to both the artists’ works, and utilize some of the theoretical frameworks and historical knowledge we studied in class to make your posts more well rounded.

As your mother (talk about being in a global stage!) said, this is a well-written reportage and analysis of Motevalli’s work that we viewed as a class. In particular, I thought your mix of primary research (interviews and correspondence with Motevalli), secondary sources (18th street web site, Motevalli’s bio and web site), and your own commentary and analysis striked the right balance for the format of the blog, as it did for the premise of our class. Good work. The discussion and questions you posed regarding the difference between ‘art’ and ‘sacred or religious art’ here are very interesting, because religious art is, for the most part, outside of the contemporary art market, where one could argue that capitalism is perhaps the ultimate religion. The idea of the scared and the everyday also brings up the questions you continue to ask regarding the politics of location and context, which I am sure you will continue to explore in your thesis. There are some minor issues here with writing and grammar. Your post could do with another edit. But all in all this is fantastic work you are doing.

Again, your post here demonstrates a keen awareness and good use of the multimedia platform that the blog format offers. Your inclusion of media clips really added to your reflection on seeing the work of Kersels. Your discussion about Kersel’s own distinction between his practice and that of a more conventional photographer, performance artist, or object-makers relates to some of the discussions we have had in class regarding the differences in practice and critical reception of artists who use video as one among other means of expression (Kersels, Matthew Barney, Vito Acconci, etc.) and self-identified video artists (Bill Viola, Susan Mogul, Nam June Paik, etc.). It would have been good if you had made that connection in your writing. Similarly, your discussion about Kersels’ use of his body in his work relates to our class discussion on how the body informs video art practices. It would enrich your discussion here to have those connections drawn out explicitly.

Your posts on the Resolution 3 Symposium are successful in that they provided vivid descriptions of the programs you attended. Your writing style here, with its observant and detailed accounts, works well to convey what took place during the weekend of the Symposium. By the way, I was not aware that Patti Podesta was at the Symposium, are you sure about that? I also appreciated your account of your own experience there - from my perspective as one of the organizers and your professor, it is interesting to experience the event through your eyes, so to speak... That said, it would have been nice to hear more about the actual discussions and presentations, and what you thought of them. Also, given that the blog format allows incorporation of video, audio, and still images, it would be interesting to see you experiment more with its multi-media capacities.

Your writing has shown much improvement in this assignment. Compared to your previous paper, the writing here is more succinct, lively, and your sense of humor came through in useful ways. The analysis you incorporated with the reportage also works well for the most part, although as I said before, you should work more fact checking - making sure you write down the correct name of the artists and titles of artworks, check your spelling, grammar, etc. so you can continue to improve. Also, given that the blog format is conducive to incorporating other forms of media, I would encourage you to explore this possibilities more, such as embedding web links instead just pasting them into your text.

In all, your posts were perceptive and succinct in conveying the programs at the Resolution 3 Symposium and at the follow-up events our class attended after that weekend. You did a good job combining reportage and reflection, and raise some important questions regarding the works presented at the different events. The use of video and still images gave us an additional media dimension to the events at Pitzer, LACE, and the MAK Center. The posts are laid out very well so that the text, video and images alternate nicely to take us through a multi-media experience. Good work!

You did a wonderful job taking a leadership position with this project, and in setting up the blog for the class. The format of the blog seem to function well for you. I like the writing you did on the Symposium— a good blend of anecdotal reportage and analytical reflection on the issues that where brought up there. You other post, which focused on images from the days of the Symposium at LACE, gave us another perspective of your experience. It would have been nice to have more images of the activities of the weekend itself, and some of the participants. But in all, you did a great job with this project!

I really think that having Mr. Bilal at the symposium was a great way to start the discussions. This enabled all of the groups to use his project as a springboard to discuss the other issues surrounding video as an artform and medium.
